Il Gran Maestro predecessore del Karate moderno Choki Motobu nacque nel 1871 nel seno di una delle famiglie più antiche e rispettate dell'isola di Okinawa. La famiglia Motobu, fedeli domestici del re, praticava una serie di esercizi marziali, probabilmente importati dalla Cina. Quest i esercizi davano loro la preparaz ione necessaria per difendere il Re se ne aveva bisogno ed erano considerati una forma produttiva di passare il tempo per la società di Ryu Kyu. Questi esercizi e queste tecniche, plasmati da molti anni di esperienza e di pratica, finirono per trasformarsi nell'unico metodo marziale tipico della famigl ia Motobu. Questa forma di lot ta combinava divincolamenti, colpi, calci, fughe e difesa contro spade, lance, col tel l i , ecc. . . con un metodo di esercizi che sembrava unico ad Okinawa: il Makiwara. Choki Motobu si piegò di f ronte ad un problema addominale e morì il 2 settembre del 1944 nella Città di Naha, Okinawa, all'età di 73 anni. Gli insegnamenti di Choki Motobu sono ancora vivi nel cuore e nel la mente di mi l ioni di al l ievi di Karate, che r iconoscono l 'eredi tà di questo Gran Maest ro di Karate Kempo. Ken B.
